Contributing writer Paul Gerard profiles Joseph Hanreddy, artistic director of the Madison Repertory Theatre. Hanreddy, 41, explains how he works. "The key is getting everybody to embrace the same play," he says. "The joy of directing is that point where the rehearsal pivot turns, when you're no longer teaching the play, but the play is being taught back to you. If the play's rich, I start to see all sorts of things I never saw, things that certainly weren't part of my directorial plan." Hanreddy leaves in 1993 to lead Milwaukee Repertory Theater, where he remains. The Mad Rep goes out of business in February 2009.
