The town of Westport north of Madison is catering to the city's "insatiable appetite for upscale housing," reports indefatigable editorial intern Richard Winton in his cover story. Mariner's Cove is springing up on Lake Mendota's north shore, along with 73 condo units and amenities like yacht slips. Similar projects are also on the drawing board or being proposed, Winton adds, but environmentalists are sounding alarms over potential threats to Cherokee Marsh and other fragile wetlands. Meanwhile, Madison Mayor Paul Soglin raises a red flag over housing disparity: "We cannot continue to have the development of upscale housing, basically for upscale white families, on the perimeters of the city, creating a segregated housing situation." Westport continues to grow and thrive. Winton is now a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times.
