Ela Weissberger is a 78-year-old interior decorator who lives in Tappan, N.Y. She is also the healthy little girl with baby teeth and a quiet smile in the photograph on the cover of The Cat With the Yellow Star.
This book gives readers an inside view of Ela's life after the cover photo was taken, when Nazis invaded her home in Sudetenland and she was sent to Terezin, a concentration camp.
Photos of children, their art created in Terezin and other artifacts enrich the text. This scrapbook-style combination yields an enlightening experience for all readers. It is difficult to read this book and not reach out and touch the vivid photograph of the yellow cloth star on page nine and wonder what it would be like to wear.
