New bike bridge
Today's image is titled New bike bridge and was photographed by Michael Leland.
This photo shows the new pedestrian-bicycle bridge over East Washington Avenue, as seen from beneath the passage of its ramp over Starkweather Creek. Built over the last couple of years and completed this spring, the bridge is one of the most visible elements in the increasingly connected network of bike trails around Madison.
Leland provides directions for bicyclists approaching the bridge from the Atwood-Schenk neighborhood: "It's reachable from the Cap City trail behind Madison-Kipp (look for the Starkwater Creek sign). You'll wind your way along a short trail, two short street stretches (signs point the way), and end up on Milwaukee St. When the roadwork on Clyde Gallagher is finished, you'll have a straight shot at this bridge, but for now, turn left on Milwaukee, and right on Marquette. Across E. Wash, the bridge puts you on another short path that takes you to Commerical Av."
The ongoing development of the city's trail system was detailed in Isthmus by David Medaris back in May, with a focus on the increasing number of "missing links" strengthening the network. More information about getting around town by foot or bike can be explored and personalized in the Madison Area Transportation Options Map.
