Well attended Anti-Prop 8 rally
Today's image is titled Well attended Anti-Prop 8 rally and was photographed by Nataraj Hauser.
Thousands of people gathered in scores of cities in all 50 states on Saturday to protest against the passage of Proposition 8, a ballot measure banning gay marriage in California. Madison was a part of this nationwide day of action, with supporters of equal marriage rights gathering at Library Mall for a march up State Street for a rally at the Capitol. "It was a delightful mix of ages and genders, and LGBT(and S) relationships," notes Hauser in the caption to this photo of the demonstration. "It wasn't especially angry, rather I would say it was a bit festive."
The image is one of several featured in a photo essay by Hauser, documenting the march, rally, the demonstrators, and their variety of signs objecting to the proposition. "Of course, here in Wisconsin, gays and lesbians had already been marginalized by a despicable state constitutional amendment" he shamed the Badger State, "so perhaps it was just another kick in the shorts rather than something personal."
Many others speaking out against Prop 8 on Saturday likewise captured images from the rally. Their work includes a collection of photos and videos taken by Adam Chernow, a photo set by Phil Ejercito, another set by Reem Totonchi, a handful of shots by Elisa Derickson, and finally, another small set shared here by organizers and participants.
"It needs to be remembered that Prop 8 was only a battle, it was not the war," concluded Humphrey. "History is turning a page, and the marchers knew they were on the right side of the battle lines."
