First snow of 2008-09 winter
Today's image is titled First snow of 2008-09 winter and was photographed by Jason Joyce.
Madison received its first substantial snowfall of the season early Monday morning. The totals were minimal, particularly when compared to the monster storms that reigned last winter, but enough to give the roads and surrounding landscape that familiar gray and slushy pallor, as seen in this photo shot on the southwest side.
As detailed in a report issued by the National Weather Service:
Light to moderate snow overnight across southern Wisconsin resulted in accumulations of 1 to around 4 inches. Sheriff departments noted that there were several accidents in each county due to slippery roads. The lightest snow accumulations were near the Illinois border... and the greatest amount was a band of around 4 inches from Pardeville in Columbia County northeast into Fond du Lac County. There was an unofficial report of 5 inches just northwest of Ripon in northwestern Fond du Lac County.
Flurries are possible through the evening, but forecast calls for dry skies through the rest of this holiday week, and it's likely that this snow will be mostly gone by Thanksgiving.
