Although their claim to being "Madison's first gastro-pub" is dubious, Cooper's Tavern has some gimmicks that earn it the Sconz seal of approval. One is its diehard commitment to international sporting broadcasts. It and Brocach were the two bars in Madison that pledged to show EVERY World Cup soccer game. Yes, even the 6:30 ones. There is beer a-plenty.
Not only do they have a wide selection of beer, but during the games they offer nifty international specials. Some of them are predictable, but some genuinely impressed me. Heineken during the Dutch game, whatever. But I couldn't believe they had $2.50 bottles of Kronenburg, the beer that is omnipresent in France.
They have friendly bartenders too.
I think I'm going to go watch a game right now. Anybody who is interested, please join me. I am wearing a Michigan State shirt (don't ask why) and I plan to be sitting at the bar.
