Will Russ Feingold run for president? Despite being the proud owner of a "Russ Feingold for President" T-shirtthat I found at Goodwill and was apparently manufactured by Dennis DeNure, I harbor no illusions of a presidential bid from Spinegold.
The more likely scenario that is generating chatter is a 2012 bid for Wisconsin's other Senate seat. Although current occupant Herb Kohl has given no indication that he plans to retire, it would be naive to believe the 75-year-old isn't at least considering it, especially in light of the Bucks' exciting future.
The La Crosse Tribune has an article titled "Feingold's future unlikely to include a 2012 run," which included little supporting evidence beyond a predictable quote from DPW Chair Mike Tate:
The speech fueled speculation Feingold might run for president against Barack Obama or seek the seat of fellow Democrat Sen. Herb Kohl in 2012. Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Mike Tate pooh-poohed both scenarios.
"He's not going to run for president. He's not going to challenge Herb Kohl. I believe Herb Kohl is going to run for re-election," Tate said, adding, "the Democratic Party is very excited about that."
Nothing surprising. Tate's job is to support Democrats in office, not those who might supplant them. The Tribune also quoted UW Prof. Charles Franklin, who noted that there are many public interest orgs that would like to have Feingold on staff. Very true, but that does not rule out a bid either.
Meanwhile, Matthew Rothschild is unequivocal in his belief that Kohl should bow out ASAP for Feingold.
I think it'd be coolest if Feingold became a UW professor. Any bets?
