In an email to The Sconz, Brett Hulsey, the Democratic nominee for the 77th Assembly district, said he misinterpreted a congratulatory phone call from Rep. Tammy Baldwin on the night of his primary victory as an endorsement. "Tammy called to congratulate me after the primary and we have talked several times since then. I took our discussions to mean that I had her support, and I am sorry if there was a misunderstanding," he said.
Hulsey has been attacked by supporters of Ben Manski, the Green Party candidate, for touting the support of high-profile officeholders, including Baldwin, State Rep. Mark Pocan and State Sen. Fred Risser, who they say never endorsed him.
On Friday Risser told the Daily Cardinal he would be endorsing Hulsey, as the Democratic candidate. Pocan maintains he is not endorsing, however, he is willing to be named as a sponsor of a Hulsey fundraiser.
