This year The Sconz enjoyed the smoothest moving experience since the blog was founded over on College Ct. in the spring of 2009. The Sconz headquarters has since moved thrice. Once with roommates, once on my own, and finally, once with the company of Mrs. Sconz.
I've always managed to supplement my new castle with a variety of goodies from Hippie Christmas, which is how we Madisonians refer to the vast deposits of household items college kids throw on to the curb as they move out.
Senior year I got a mattress and box spring, which was admittedly a little stiff but apparently free of bed bugs, meaning it satisfied the only prerequisite.
The year before a guy who sublet with me left behind a gigantic pipe that is sold as a tobacco smoking device. The squares that my roomies and I were, we only ever loaded it with safer, less addictive plants. I can't imagine the fun we missed out on.
But I think this year was the best haul so far.
First case: Walking with Mrs. Sconz's parents past a pile of junk on Carroll St, I noticed a giant framed poster of the movie Australia, with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. I'd either never heard of the film or forgotten about it, but it seemed like a poster I would have grabbed in a second during my college days, if for no better reason than to have something utterly random on my wall.
But it wasn't until a block and a few jokes later that I realized how nice that frame would look around my Dick Nixon '68 poster. Or the poster of former Phillies slugger Dick Williams. Any Dick would do.
In the end, neither "Dick" posters fit in the frame, so we made do with one of the other many great pictures I've accumulated over the years. Not only does it look nice, but I'm counting on that frame (and the other one I found with it) being worth a pretty penny. It apparently comes from the "Crystal Art Gallery" in Vernon, CA. I've yet to get through to their sales department for a price estimate, but I'll keep you updated on Twitter if I find out.
Oh, and today Hippie Xmas yielded a 26 inch TV, a much-needed upgrade just in time for my much-needed cable upgrade.
Things are finally looking up for The Sconz.
