Want to hear about an interesting candidate for Spencer Black's seat? He's progressive, he's got political experience, and he seems to have proven himself an able campaigner. Most importantly, he's a Sconz commenter.
His name is Peter Rickman. A 28-year-old law student, Rickman is the chair of the 2nd Congressional District Democratic Party as well as the president of the UW Teacher's Assistant Association. In the latter role, he was the head of the successful No New Seg Fees campaign last month, which mobilized a groundbreaking number of students to vote on a campus referendum. The campaign defeated an initiative that would raise student fees to fund a state-of-the-art new gym.
Rickman just moved into the 77th district two weeks ago. If he does run, he has quite a few friends in high places. He knows just about everybody in the legislature and he has been very active in union politics.
For what it's worth, Rickman is also a very good public speaker and in my experience, he knows what he's talking about. If he runs, he will not be a talking points candidate.
Why not? Is law school any more of a hindrance to being a legislator than any other full-time job would be?
