Named after a line in a famous inspirational writing ("my favorite poem since I was 16," owner Dawn Hellenbrand confides), this Willy Street staple played a prank on the neighborhood in January - putting the entire inventory on sale and papering the windows dark for 10 days.
Much to the relief of nearby fans, however, Pick More Daisies was not closed but rather receiving a 10th-anniversary facelift. Displays are revamped, furniture has been added, and the entire space has a lighter and far airier feel.
The best part about this fresh Daisy is the artful way that Hellenbrand and her sister, Laura, have integrated their new and vintage products, often side-by-side. Next to the newly hand-picked amber and labdorite jewelry ($49-$74) are two cabinets filled with antique brooches, necklaces, and silver spoons ($36). Similarly, a set of four embroidered cocktail napkins (new at $14.50) match perfectly with a vintage tumbler set (6/$36).
Dawn Hellenbrand strives for a ladylike eclecticism, and the effect is not lost on this oft-jaded shopper. From the pastel egg soaps with their own little cartons (4/$12.50) to the impeccably re-covered antique armchairs, there truly is something for everyone.
My late grandmother would have swooned over the original Fiestaware ($6-$20), my mother over the delicate tea towels. And as for me? I picked up a bottle of Dirty Girl bubble bath ($12.50) and swung my bag happily all the way home.
