Last night's debate didn't help the Obama-Biden campaign.
The first thing you noticed in the vice presidential debate last night was that Paul Ryan won the American flag lapel pin battle. His pin was much bigger.
The second thing you couldn't help but notice is the uncanny resemblance between Paul Ryan and Eddie Munster. That widow's peak is amazing. Meanwhile, you have to admit that Joe Biden's hair plugs are holding up pretty darn well.
I would have liked the moderator Martha Raddatz to do some moderating. Until the last twenty minutes or so, these guys seemed like two guys at a bar after they'd had a couple, not two guys running to be a heart beat away from running the free world. This wasn't a debate -- it was an argument.
I thought Biden seemed to be overcompensating for the president's sleepy performance last week. He was going to come out swinging. Fine. But by talking over Ryan and Raddatz he seemed to me to be overbearing. What was worse was his posture when Ryan was talking. His smiling and shaking his head made him come off as condescending. Almost as bad as Al Gore's heavy sighs in 2000.
Biden was at his best when he brought up Romney's comment that 47% of Americans were essentially freeloaders. He knocked that one out the park.
But both candidates forgot to slow down, leave the statistics behind, and just communicate. Nobody was Bill Clinton here.
But on balance, it seemed to me that Biden came off as too much where Obama came off as too little.
I still think Obama-Biden will win, but they haven't helped themselves in the debates so far.
