2013 Tony Award winner for Best Play
Forward Theater Company will conclude its 2014-15 season with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, by Christopher Durang. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, Vanya and Sonia… is a giddy mashup of classic themes with a modern spin and inventive comic twists. It will be presented in the Playhouse at Overture Center, April 9th - 26.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike tells the story of two siblings living out their middle age after years of caring for their ailing, Chekhov-loving parents. It's a mild and tedious existence that changes once their movie-star sister Masha arrives with her twenty-something boy-toy, Spike. Soon the siblings are dressing up as fairy-tale characters, channeling Maggie Smith, and dodging the voodoo curses of their soothsaying cleaning woman. Amidst the hilarity, there are moments when this family finds that good old-fashioned human connection might not be obsolete after all.
“This might be the most fun we’ve had working on a production,” said FTC’s Artistic Director, Jennifer Uphoff Gray. “Not only is this simply one of the funniest plays to make it to the Broadway stage, but we have the perfect cast to bring this hilarious script to life.”
The cast includes Advisory Company member Sarah Day, APT Company Member James Ridge, Milwaukee’s Julie Swenson, Alexandra Bonesho and Marcella Kearns, and Chicago’s Travis Knight.
