Talk on LaCrosse's Green Complete Streets ordinance
Thursday, April 9, 2015
Fitchburg Public Library, 5530 Lacy Rd, Fitchburg, WI
Host: Fitchburg Library Green Thursdays. Presentation: Annual Resource Conservation Commission Event on Green Streets
Bernard Lenz, Assistant City Engineer, will join us to talk about his efforts in La Crosse to improve health, safety, and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and public transportation users of all ages and abilities through La Crosse's 2012 Green Complete Streets ordinance. In addition to accessibility and safety, La Crosse's Green Complete Streets model also ensures environmental sustainability through landscaping, stormwater management and air quality.
All Complete Streets look different, but common features include sidewalks, bike lanes, wide shoulders, raised crosswalks, bus shelters and crossings, refuge medians, wide shoulders, special bus lanes, sidewalk bulb outs and audible pedestrian signals. Complete Streets make it easier to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work, which facilitate a healthier, active lifestyle. Green Tuesdays & Thursdays events offer opportunities for lively discussion and community engagement around sustainability topics. Events are free and open to the public. Free popcorn at Fitchburg's Green Thursdays.
