Hurray for the Riff Raff’s brand of Americana is some of the most authentic and heartfelt circulating in the current folk revival scene. Led by frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra, the band writes tunes for those who exist outside of the norms of mainstream culture, though last year they garnered widespread approval with a major-label debut, Small Town Heroes. NEW US TOUR STARTS MARCH 5t
TWO NYC DATES, LA, BONNAROO + MORE
"Segarra's supple, intimate vocals are about more than conjuring a musical past - she clearly wants to shape the future, too" - Rolling Stone
"The only location that matters on Small Town Heroes is the one in which you first encounter Hurray for the Riff Raff." - Paste Magazine, 50 Best Albums of 2014
"Segarra's rootsy, heartfelt storytelling is hitting a vein." - Billboard
In celebration of Hurray For The Riff Raff's upcoming US tour dates, we are proud to announce the release of Noisetrade's latest sampler. The downloadable playlist includes a cover of Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" as well as tracks from Hurray For The Riff Raff's critically acclaimed album Small Town Heroes and "Everybody Knows (For Trayvon Martin)".
"I wrote ["Everybody Knows"] last year, on February 26th, one year after Trayvon Martin was shot to death in a Florida suburb. A young black man barely 17 years old brought to his end for no reason other than suspicion," Segarra explained. "It also happened to be my birthday. As I celebrated another year on Earth, I was haunted by the fact that his life ended so soon ... This song is a reminder that we must not forget him. We must not forget about the work that lies ahead of us."
This song and others remind us that Hurray For The Riff Raff is Alynda Segarra, but in many ways it's much more than that: it's a young woman leaving her indelible stamp on the American folk tradition. Also featured in the sampler is "The Body Electric", a track that American Songwriter named the #1 song of 2014 when they wrote "Alynda Segarra takes more than 100 years of murder ballads to task." NPR Music also named it the "political folk song of the year".
If you're listening to songs from 'Small Town Heroes,' odds are you're part of the riff raff, and these songs are for you. Head below to check out the full sampler playlist and the band's upcoming tour dates, starting in Houston on March 5.
