LIVE AT THE PABST THEATER
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra announces performances at the Pabst Theater in spring 2015: Beethoven's Eighth on May 14-17, 2015 at Pabst Theater, with guest conductor Daniel Cohen and violinist Kristin Lee; and Beethoven's Fifth on May 21-24, 2015 at Pabst Theater, with guest conductor Edwin Outwater.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93, was composed in 1812 and premiered in 1814 in Vienna. The Eighth is one of the composer's more lighthearted symphonies, and he wrote it while growing increasingly deaf. These concerts also include Beethoven's Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, Peter Eötvös's Shadows, and Vivian Fung's Violin Concerto featuring violinist Kristin Lee.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, was composed from 1804-1808 and premiered in 1808 in Vienna. Today, it is one of the most well-known and frequently played symphonies. These concerts also include Sean Shepherd's These Particular Circumstances, Nico Muly's So Far So Good, and Feldman's "Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety." The concerts close the 2014.15 Classics season.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Daniel Cohen, a recent Gustavo Dudamel Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, makes his debut this season with the Milwaukee Symphony and Tampere Philharmonic orchestras and Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. He also returns to the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale in Florence. Highlights from last season include engagements with the Orchestra dell'Arena di Verona and London Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble. Other engagements were with the Orchestre National de Montpellier, Oxford Philomusica, and the European Union Chamber Ensemble. Daniel recently made debuts with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and the Orchestra of Norrlands Operan, where he will conduct again in the 2015.16 season.
Korean-American violinist Kristin Lee has been praised by The Strad for her "mastery of tone" and "one of the most satisfying concerts in years." A violinist of remarkable versatility and impeccable technique, Ms. Lee enjoys a vibrant career as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. Her recent engagements include recitals in New York's Merkin Concert Hall and Florida's Kravis Center, and appearances with the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra of China and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. She recently curated a program that premiered at Philadelphia's World Café Live. Upcoming engagements include a debut performance at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and solo appearances with the Atlantic and Milwaukee symphony orchestra. She also tours with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, in California, New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
Edwin Outwater is music director of Ontario's Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, director of summer concerts at the San Francisco Symphony, and regularly guest conducts the Chicago and New World symphonies. Equally at home interpreting canonical masterworks, premiering new commissions, and creating innovative, audience-building programming initiatives, the American conductor is, as San Francisco Classical Voice recently observed, "headed for a top-tier future." Highlights of the 2014.15 season include returning to the San Francisco Symphony for subscription and family concerts, appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and guest appearances with the New World Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. In the 2013.14 season, Outwater led the orchestra in a diverse array of programs, ranging from his fresh take on repertory favorites by Beethoven, Britten, Prokofiev, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms, to collaborations with composers Dan Deacon and Nicole Lizee in the KWS's "Intersections" series.
ABOUT THE MSO
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Edo de Waart, is among the finest orchestras in the nation and the largest cultural institution in Wisconsin. Now in his sixth season with the MSO, Maestro de Waart has led sold-out concerts, elicited critical acclaim, and conducted a celebrated performance at Carnegie Hall on May 11, 2012. The MSO's full-time professional musicians perform over 135 classics, pops, family, education, and community concerts each season in venues throughout the state. Since its inception in 1959, the MSO has found innovative ways to give music a home in the region, develop music appreciation and talent among area youth, and raise the national reputation of Milwaukee.
