PBR WELCOMES A LATE NIGHT PUB SHOW IN THE PABST
REMASTERING SOUL MUSIC
LIVE AT THE PABST PUB
FRIDAY MAY 1
Nick Hakim creates a full-sounding and gorgeous take on soul music with an old-school vibe in the vein of early Motown or Stax, but with a recognizably modern touch. It's music for late nights and early mornings, a sensual, blissfully nocturnal experience that introduces an arresting new artist.
His forthcoming EP, Where Will We Go Pt. 2, is the second installment and follow up to this summer's previously released Where Will We Go Pt. 1, out now on his own Earseed Records. The new EP explores his blues-tinged, emotional sound.
Raised in Washington, D.C. in a household overflowing with musical diversity ranging from soul, hip-hop, go-go, folk music and more from his Chilean and Peruvian parents, it comes as no surprise that the 23-year old Hakim tends to blend genres, mixing the ambient airy sound of psychedelic, with the raw gut-wrenching emotion of the blues.
He performs a broad range of the instruments heard on the EP alongside shared production duties, with an early admiration for Marvin Gaye and Harry Nilsson seeping through these introductory recordings. The vulnerability of Nick's vocals, intimate and silken, is a powerful instrument in its own right that never pushes itself to excess.
Hakim explains of his debut EP, "I was caught in a hazy gloom, alone in my room, filled up with booze while writing this music. I would write very early in the morning after nights of no sleep. Dunkin Donuts coffee was my friend. I would set up a mic, record, and later make sense of whatever came out."
The first single "Pour Another" has racked up 100k+ hits on soundcloud and is just the beginning for this talented young artist, whose tender yet confident emotional expression is a fresh and intoxicating introduction.
