Award-winning pianist/composer David Berkman celebrates the release of his new Palmetto Records release Old Friends and New Friends from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, at Morphy Recital Hall, UW Humanities Bldg. 455 N. Park St. Madison, WI. This performance features Berkman and Dayna Stephens with two of the university's small jazz ensembles: the UW Blue Note Ensemble and the UW Contemporary Jazz Ensemble. It is free and open to the public.
Berkman, who's received wide critical acclaim, "is reclaiming ground that seemed lost to jazz posterity; he has an Ellingtonian sense of grace combined with driving rhythms and abstract surprises. More an inventor than radical reformer, he keeps his compositions concise, but leaves his experimental options open." - The Guardian (UK)
"Mr. Berkman is on the extremely smart end of the post-1960s mainstream...spinning off new dialects from a... traditional language play(ing) with moderate aggression, swinging hard in his phrasing, he always burrows in, finding transcendence... As a bandleader and a soloist, Mr. Berkman has commitment and poise and modesty; he listens and moderates and subtly changes course." - Ben Ratliff, New York Times
