Ricky D’Ambrose is, without question, one of the most gifted young American filmmakers. In these three shorts, his mastery of composition, color, rhythm, sound, language, and performance is clear. While all of D’Ambrose’s work maintains a purity and consistency of vision, the variations from work to work indicate an
ever-developing personal style. All three films deploy minimalism and elliptical narration to arrive at moments of understated, lingering emotion: the discovery of buried truths, the bleary-eyed shock of unexpected tragedy, the blank confusion of absolute alienation. D’Ambrose’s fiction work will be accompanied by two video interviews with filmmakers (Chantal Akerman and Dan Sallitt) he produced for Mubi.
