Imagine dragons: What has 42 arms, one drum and the head of a mythical beastie? Find out at Capital Lakes DragonFest, where teams of more than 800 paddlers will propel the 40-foot dragon boats in head-to-head combat across the mystic waters of Lake Wingra. It’s a great spectator event, and supports fitness programs for women cancer survivors.
press release: What’s a dragon boat festival? A popular summertime event and proven crowd-pleaser, dragon boat festivals feature 40-foot-long boats - each filled with 20 people paddling in unison, a steersman, and a drummer - racing each other along a watery course, while bringing friends, family and community together for a common cause. Capital Lakes DragonFest is hosted by TEAMSurvivor Madison, a nonprofit based in Madison that provides year-round fitness programs to women cancer survivors. Last year’s festival had more than 1,000 spectators cheering on 700 paddlers as they “paddled with a purpose” on Lake Wingra. This year, on June 18th, we anticipate having 40 boats with more than 800 paddlers registering for our biggest DragonFest yet. Gather your peers, friends, and family to form a team of 20 paddlers, three alternates and one drummer. We provide a coach, experienced steersperson and a practice session so your team is ready for an action-packed day on the water. You bring a team and we provide the fun! Visit our website for details on team-registration and sponsorship options. Paddles Up!
