press release: Gabrielle Lucille Fuentes is a Madison native with a debut novel, THE SLEEPING WORLD (Touchstone Hardcover; September 13, 2016) which is being called “stunning” by Cristina Garcia. THE SLEEPING WORLD captures an era of political and personal possibility, and the universal restlessness of coming of age in 1970s Spain. In the wreckage of Dictator Francisco Franco’s regime, four friends throw themselves into the country’s celebration of freedom and fight for political control, embracing the bootleg punk music scene and the student riots with equal fervor.
Gabrielle Lucille Fuentes will be signing copies of THE SLEEPING WORLD in her native Madison Monday, September 12, 2016; 7:00 PM, Barnes & Noble, 7433 Mineral Point Road.
After a violent incident at one of the riots, Mosca, Grito, La Canaria, and Marco blow off their university graduation exams and leave their hometown of Casarojas. Mosca is looking for something more though: her brother, who was taken by the government, and whom Mosca believes is still alive. The search takes her on a journey across Europe, and along the way Mosca shows that she is willing to sacrifice anything, even her friends, to find him.
Cristina Garcia, author of Dreaming in Cuban, says of, THE SLEEPING WORLD, “A searing, beautifully written novel that captures the exhilaration and dangers of 1970s post-Franco Spain. Mosca, a bitterly jaded young woman, goes on a harrowing search for her missing brother—and the history that destroyed their lives. Violent, heartbreaking, unforgettable, THE SLEEPING WORLD is a stunning debut.”
