History Sandwiched In: Changes in Wisconsin's Cranes and their Habitats Over the Last 150 Years
At the time of statehood, Wisconsin had over 7 million acres of savanna, 2 million acres of prairie and over 1 million acres of wetland. Our state teamed with wildlife, including both Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes. All of this has since changed and much has been lost. Yet the ecological story of what has happened since statehood is both one of decline and restoration, one of extirpation and resurgence. Jeb Barzen, Research Associate at the International Crane Foundation, shares the story of cranes and the ecosystems they inhabit in Wisconsin, which is ultimately a story of great hope for our future.
