John W. Hall is the Ambrose-Hessletine Chair in U.S. Military History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A former member of the faculty at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, he currently serves as a historian for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His academic research focuses on early American warfare with a particular emphasis on intercultural conflict and cooperation between European and Native American societies during the eras of the American Revolution and the Early Republic. He is the author of "Uncommon Defense: Indian Allies in the Black Hawk War" (Harvard, 2009) and his current book project, "Dishonorable Duty: The U.S. Army and the Removal of the Southeastern Indians," examines the Andrew Jackson administration's use of military force to complete the transformation of contested borderland into part of a fractious national domain.
Jeremi Suri holds the Mack Brown Distinguised Chair for Leadership in Global Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is a professor in the university's Department of History and the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Professor Suri is the author and editor of nine books on contemporary politics and foreign policy. His most recent book is "The Impossible Presidency: The Rise and Fall of America's Highest Office." Professor Suri writes for major newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New York Daily News, The Dallas Morning News, The Houston Chronicle, The Boston Globe, Foreign Affairs, Fortune, The American Prospect, and Wired. He also writes for various online sites and blogs. He is a popular public lecturer, and he appears frequently on radio and television programs.
