José Carlos Teixeira, a native of Portugal and an assistant professor in the UW-Madison art department, presents part two of his series of documentary films. ON EXILE, screening at MMoCA’s Imprint Gallery until May 20, explores ideas of migration, personal identity and displacement. The films are presented as first-person interviews and defined by a series of extremely close-zoomed camera shots. The technique creates a deep and unexpected intimacy with the interview subjects and lends an urgent reminder of just how present — and pressing — these issues are.

Open Doors for Refugees and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art invite you to a special screening and discussion of "ON EXILE, Elsewhere Within Here," a video artwork by José Carlos Teixeira. The artist will give a short introduction before the film and will offer additional comments during the Q&A following the screening.
The film presents the first-hand narratives of Muslim refugees who—having fled Syria, Iraq, Somalia, and Sudan—are currently living in the Midwest. They have escaped from hardships such as civil wars, ISIS, and dictatorial governments that crack down on protesters appealing for basic human rights. Weaving together stories into a poignant collage of voices, Teixeira presents us with a film that reminds us to take time to listen and to care about what we hear.
