Bio: Chicago based bassist/composer and bandleader Matt Ulery has developed an instantly recognizable sound. Known for his sweeping lyricism, unconventional phrase structures and expressionistic emotionalism, Ulery’s music, from small, diverse chamber ensembles to full orchestras, is informed by the entire spectrum of jazz, classical, rock, pop and folk – specifically American, South American, Balkan and other European folk styles. He has been performing for 20 years on upright, electric and brass basses.
For a decade, Ulery has been the leader of his own groups and a frequent collaborator. Ulery has produced and released seven critically acclaimed albums of all original music under his name including his most recent double album, “Festival,” on his label, Woolgathering Records.
Ulery earned a master of music degree at DePaul University, and bachelor’s degree in music composition at The Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. He has played in bands with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Fareed Haque, Howard Levy, Patricia Barber, Goran Ivanovic, Jeff Parker, Zach Brock, Jimmy Chamberlin, Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill and countless others. As a composer, Ulery has collaborated with ensembles such as Eighth Blackbird, New Millennium Orchestra of Chicago, Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and Wild Belle.
When not touring parts of the U.S. and Europe, Matt appears regularly in the Chicago area music venues and has performed with his own groups at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Chicago Orchestra Hall, Millennium Park Pritzker Pavilion, Chicago Cultural Center, The Krannert Center, Jazz Showcase, The Metro and countless other fine music listening rooms. In addition to performing, recording and writing, Ulery is on faculty at Loyola University Chicago and gives master classes and clinics nationwide.
During his decade-plus on the Chicago scene, Rob Clearfield has developed a reputation for lyrical, emotive compositions that contain the kernel of an oxymoron: a sound that is somehow both sad and redemptively positive. For inspiration, he turns to gospel music, Brahms, blues, Radiohead (especially Jonny Greenwood!), and modern jazz artists like Kneebody, Marilyn Crispell, Ben Monder and Kurt Rosenwinkel, as well as to other art forms, like the films of Ingmar Bergman and Krzysztof Kieslowski. Clearfield has performed with an impressive roster of Chicago’s finest jazz musicians including trumpeter Marquis Hill, saxophonists Ernest Dawkins and Greg Ward, pianist-vocalist Patricia Barber, and harmonica master Howard Levy, and is equally at home performing with progressive rock, folk rock and R&B bands.
Chicago jazz luminary Patricia Barber calls Jon Deitemyer “the drummer everyone wants right now." In his short professional career, he has collaborated with Ms. Barber, Zach Brock, Grazyna Auguscik, Phil Markowitz, Ben Paterson, Philip Dizack, Lynne Arriale, Russ Johnson and countless others, and performed on dozens of albums. At the esteemed jazz program at the University of North Texas, he studied with legendary drummer Ed Soph and, at the Banff Centre for the Arts, he worked alongside Clarence Penn, Dave Douglas and Jason Moran while developing his unique brand of drumming and composition. Deitemyer currently holds teaching positions at Loyola University Chicago and the Chicago Academy for the Arts.
