press release: Bastille Day, or, as it’s known in France, La Fête Nationale or Le Quatorze Juillet, is celebrated each year on July 14. In recent years, Madisonians have been commemorating this important event of the French Revolution with La Fête de Marquette, a community festival with food, drinks and, of course, music. This year, with the cooperation of the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center, the Wisconsin Union Theater just had to get in on the action. Join the Theater, WUD Performing Arts, and WUD Music on the Terrace July 14-16 for a Bastille Day celebration you won’t want to miss.

Please note: due to circumstances beyond our control, Mélisande will not be performing on Thursday. However, a DJ will play some great Francophone tunes.
Next, join us on Friday for a Madison favorite, the Cajun Strangers. These Madison natives are one of the Midwest’s premier Cajun music bands, playing dance music from Southwest Louisiana, an area with a rich French heritage. Their energetic two steps, waltzes and blues, sung mostly in Cajun-French, are on par with the authentic bands that play down South.

Closing out our French music celebration on Saturday is Sweet Crude, a six-person band from South Louisiana that in three short years has already graced the main stages of BUKU Fest, Festival Internationale de Louisiane, French Quarter Festival and more. Sweet Crude takes the traditional music and language of Louisiana and creates completely fresh music from it. The band features rousing drums and complex harmonies that jump from English to French and back again. They also describe themselves as a group that, “would like to drink whiskey and dance all the time.” What’s not to love?
