Nutria
Tip Top Tavern 601 North St., Madison, Wisconsin 53704
press release: New Orleans-based indie and modern jazz trio Nutria will appear at Madison's Tip Top Tavern as a part of their March tour through the Midwest.
This will be Nutria's second tour of the Midwest in nine months, following a successful tour in May 2016, taking them as far as Minneapolis, MN, Madison, WI and Chicago, IL to playing jazz clubs, art spaces and dive bars before returning home to New Orleans.
Nutria is fresh off of a wildly successful collaboration with New Orleans' only professional ballet company, the Marigny Opera Ballet, in which they were commissioned to write and perform a new piece for the company's first jazz collaboration, "The Art Of Jazz." On their trip, they will be promoting their debut EP, which features five original compositions by members of the band. Recorded in Lafayette, LA by Chris Stafford of the band Feufollet, the new record was mixed and mastered in New Orleans by musical masterminds Earl Scioneaux III and Michael Seaman. Local artist Magda Boreysza provided the stunning ink and watercolor album art.
Named after the infamous South Louisiana swamp rat, Nutria is an acoustic trio that performs original modern jazz compositions with an emphasis on collective improvisation. Featuring tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet, upright bass and drums, they creatively explore traditional music of the African diaspora and Eastern Europe as well as the avant-garde.
Its members are all active as performers on the New Orleans music scene; they have shared club and festival stages near and far alongside mainstays of the New Orleans scene including Matt Lemmler, Ed Petersen, Sarah Quintana, Maggie Koerner, and local favorites Los Poboycitos, among many others.
