Out of the Darkness
press release: As many of us know, suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. Many of us might not know that last year 33% of UW-Madison students reported being too depressed to function at some point throughout the year. And, about one in four college students struggle with a diagnosable, yet often undiagnosed, mental illness.
By joining us on Sunday, April 22, in Sellery Backyard, you can help #FighttheStigma of mental illness and be a voice for mental health awareness in our community. Our 8th annual Out of the Darkness Walk serves as a bridge to connect our campus and community efforts and to strengthen the relationship between the two.
We will have an opening ceremony with stories of loss and life from individuals in the
community, a musical performance, and short talks from our Walk Coordinator and
representative from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Prior to the opening
ceremony, various organizations will be tabling, a raffle will be held, merchandise will be
available for purchase, and more activities will be taking place. All are welcomed to join in the
day’s events.
Together we can raise funds for suicide prevention and ensure that we be the difference in this effort. By participating in this year's walk, you will help increase awareness on campus and in the Madison community, and all donations received will be donated to national and local research efforts. These efforts include widespread education programs, further progress in legislative outreach, and the funding of studies that work towards preventing suicide.
Our Walk has been one of the most successful (if not THE most successful) in the nation for the last 7 years! Help us keep our Walk and fundraising efforts among the best! We hope to see you all there!
