San Fermin
With Briana Marela.
Touring in support of their 2017 LP Belong, San Fermin is still thoroughly tapped into a rich vein of indie pop music. The new project from the Brooklyn-based band is filled to the brim with gems like “Bride,” which refracts a rainbow of musical light in every direction. Opening will be Portland-based singer/songwriter Briana Marela, who will play songs from her recently released album Call It Love. That project is notable for its shimmering synth riffs combined with Marela’s spritely vocals.
$15 (ages 18+).
press release: On Briana Marela’s third album, Call It Love, the Olympia-based producer deepens her songwriting and expands her palette to explore the sounds of love in striking new ways. Throughout, she digs into the poles of her songwriting styles -- her ambient, ethereal side and her brighter, beat-driven pop leanings – with the production help of Small Black’s Juan Pieczanski and Ryan Heyner. Watch the video for “Farthest Shore” below, which was inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Farthest Shore and its themes of death and loss, and the need to face the unknown with strength.
"Farthest Shore" by Briana Marela
“I have had night terrors since I was a child, sleep paralysis, and horrible nightmares where I am trapped in my dreams and can't wake up in the true reality. These night terrors served as a big inspiration in regards to my initial vision for the music video I wanted to make for ‘Farthest Shore.’ Teaming up to co-direct with Seattle director/filmmaker Bobby McHugh, I learned that he too suffers from night terrors and sleep paralysis and he really understood and connected to the song and concept for the video. We dreamed up various shots and locations and then recruited Eleanor Petry of Seattle to work on refining the mood and vibe of the abstract narrative. In the video I am trapped within different dream worlds, never awake in waking reality, with different dream figures manipulating me without clear intent whether they are benevolent or not. The video beautifully illustrates the narrative of being trapped in dreams and trying to escape, with the fear of the unknown lurking around the corner. Besides me, the video also stars my sister Asenath and my friend/bandmate Natalie as my surreal dream figures.”
