Local beer drinkers ushered in Madison’s version of Oktoberfest on Saturday in Central Park. The Isthmus OktoBEERfest showcased more than 45 beer makers. Also on hand: meads, ciders, local artisan sausage, cheese and food carts. This was the second time for the annual event, which began in 2014 under the name “Wurst Oktoberfest.” It was perfect weather for the outdoor festival, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.
The highlights, though, were the more than 150 different beers, including many seasonal Oktoberfests. With the Badgers playing a night game against the University of Hawaii, there was an added tailgate atmosphere.
Here’s a six-pack of memories from OktoBEERfest:
An impressive Oktoberfest for the day: Octobinator from Biloba Brewing of Brookfield. Smooth, malty and a hint of warmth from its 7.7% ABV.
A nod to tradition: Oktoberfest from Weihenstephan, said to be the world’s oldest brewery. For those familiar with German standards, this traditional fest beer was brought to OktoBEERfest by the Freiburg Gastropub.
A vote for pumpkin: Stingy Jack Pumpkin Ale from Potosi Brewing. Like Oktoberfests, pumpkin beers are only around for a few months. This one has all the spices you find in a slice of pumpkin pie.
A brewery to watch: Pigeon River Brewing Company of Marion. This brewpub has been making beer since 2012, but its draft brews only occasionally make it to Madison. Getting to enjoy them at OktoBEERfest was special treat. The brewery brought three beers: Townie Cream Ale, Wet Willy Oatmeal Stout and Chipotle Smoked Porter. The lightly roasted qualities of the porter drew me back for a second glass.
Hoppy pleasure: Red Headed Wild Ride IPA from Sand Creek Brewing. This is a seasonal fresh hop beer made with three varieties of Wisconsin-grown hops. Lots of resiny aroma and flavor, sharp and crisp.
A delicious pairing: The Banana & Hefewiezen cheesecake from Looking Glass Bakery paired with Second Salem Oktoberfest. The sour cream, dark chocolate and strawberries of cheesecake blended nicely with the maltiness of the Oktoberfest style.
