Time to stop pooh-poohing Wisconsin-made wines. Ice wine is a traditional dessert wine produced from grapes frozen on the vine. Where better than Wisconsin, where "the frozen tundra" is an unofficial state shrine? The annual Ice Wine release party at Ice Wine, made from grapes picked last December 12 when the temperature was between between 10 and 15F. This dessert wine, as well as other vintages, will be served at the party, along with cheesecake, pecans, and frozen grapes to whet the appetite. , held the weekend before last in Denver. The brewery's seasonal limited release Autumnal Fire won gold in the German-style Dopplebock or Eisbock category, and its Capital Square series release Eisphyre took the bronze in the same grouping. Capital is celebrating these honors with the inaugural Fire Fest, a party that recognizes both winners along with the brand-new Eternal Flame, a vertically-brewed beer created to mark the brewery's 25th anniversary. So, granted, there are more corn mazes around these parts than you can shake an ear at, and as for these mazes having anything to do with food, it's feed corn, not sweet corn, that you're wandering through. Nonetheless, we like the KWWF Corn Maze benefiting the benefit maze offers some 2.7 miles of trails amidst 8.8 acres of maize, all of it located an energy-saving stone's throw from the west side of Madison.
