Red Sushi is leaving King Street for a new downtown location on the 300 block of West Washington Avenue. Owners Jack Yip and Tanya Zhykharevich say construction has already begun at the new location on the ground floor of the former AT&T building. The 10-story structure is undergoing a $30 million renovation by Hovde Properties, which purchased the large office building in 2014.
“The space will be three times bigger, and we need it,” says Zhykharevich. “It will be a bolder, more upscale fine dining experience.”
Red Sushi’s new digs will feature a “unique contemporary design” that’s intended to give the sushi hot spot a big-city feel, according to Zhykharevich. The new space will also include a cocktail lounge that’s nearly the size of the entire restaurant on 106 King St. It will serve food and drinks until bartime on weekends.
Other new additions include an outdoor patio with a view of the Capitol and a VIP Chef’s Table where clientele can mingle one-on-one with the itamae.
Zhykharevich says Red Sushi’s new home on West Washington may experience less foot traffic than on the busy King Street corridor. But the restaurateur is excited about the location’s proximity to the Overture Center and new high-rise apartments and condos popping up downtown.
“The possibilities on West Washington are just starting to emerge,” says Zhykharevich. “We see this as a great opportunity.”
Red Sushi will be rolling sushi on King Street until construction is complete on West Washington Avenue; that’s expected to happen in July.
