Isthmus Jazz Festival on the Terrace
Now in its 22nd year, the Isthmus Jazz Festival is a two-day celebration of America's homegrown art form. The free festival kicks off the summer season in one of Madison's most beautiful outdoor settings, the Memorial Union Terrace, with Lake Mendota as a glittering backdrop. A diverse crowd of students, jazz aficionados and casual fans fill the tables to hear a lineup that reflects a century's worth of jazz styles. Dixieland, big-band swing, bebop, Latin jazz and free jazz are all part of the mix, along with contemporary derivations like funk and hip-hop. The festival is committed to honoring jazz's glorious tradition while keeping one eye fixed on the future.

Tierney Sutton, a leading figure in vocal jazz, brings her band back home to her Wisconsin roots. In their 15 years together, the Tierney Sutton Band has been nominated three times for the Grammys' "Best Jazz Vocal Album" and has produced six jazz chart-topping albums.

In June 2005, Tierney won JazzWeek's Vocalist of the Year Award. The New York Times says Sutton is "A serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level."

The band is made up of first-rate musicians: Christian Jacob on piano, Ray Brinker on drums, and Kevin Axt and/or Trey Henry on bass. Not only do they collaborate on refreshing new arrangements of jazz standards, but their years of performing together have also resulted in a smoothly flowing stage performance.
