For the Germans, Gemuetlichkeit connotes friendliness, cheerfulness, merrymaking. Each September in Jefferson, just to the east of this Lake Mills Brewery, the annual Gemuetlichkeit Days is a celebration of the area's German heritage. Tyranena originally brewed its Gemuetlichkeit Oktoberfest to mark the Jefferson festival and the Oktoberfest season.

Tyranena owner and brewmaster Rob Larson has been working on a special-release porter for some time. About a year ago he developed an imperial porter called "Who's Your Daddy," and his latest beer expands on that brew. "Dirty Old Man" was delayed, though, but not because of recipe development oor the time it takes to ferment. It had been held up since October by the Tax and Trade Bureau, the federal agency that reviews labeling of alcoholic products.

Finally! I've been looking forward to this year's crop of hefeweizens and they are just beginning to appear, as if on cue, with the seasonal opening of our local beer gardens. Few beers usher in summer like hefeweizens. They are the perfect reward for enjoying the spring flowers and warmer days ahead. While their cloudy appearance can turn away beer drinkers who might think these beers look heavy and thick, don't be mistaken. They are refreshing and crisp.

Aunt Cal, as she is known around the Lake Mills community, is the name of the woman who graces every bottle and six-pack of Bitter Woman. Aunt Cal has become the public face of this beer, if not Tyranena Brewing. As brewer Rob Larson describes it, "We brewed our Bitter Woman IPA the way we imagine Aunt Cal may have been, very fruity and intensely bitter."

To quell the political rhetoric, Larson decided to throw an inauguration celebration for President Obama on January 20, and to mark the occasion he released the brewery's 2009 edition of its scotch ale named Sheep Shagger.

Scurvy may be the least worry of a pirate these days, but it is good news for fans of bitter beers. Tyranena Brewing is swelling its ranks of seasonal brews with Scurvy IPA, which hits store shelves in Madison this week. The name reflects the humor of owner and brewmaster Rob Larson, who creates this ale by adding orange peel to the wort. This leaves the beer with an assertive orange aroma and distinctive bitterness.

When I started this story, I thought I would focus on a summer beer style or two, like summer wheat beers. But in the process of doing my homework, I learned that focusing only on wheat would be far too limiting. We'll have a great, diverse list of beers to choose from beginning in a couple of weeks.

Regulars at the Tyranena tasting room are the beneficiaries of brewer and owner Rob Larson's skill with big malty beer. He's been playing around with cocoa nibs in his imperial porter and developed something very special.

It's the time of year when jolly orange gourds start appearing on steps and porches. But pumpkins are not just for jack-o-lanterns. Stop by your favorite beer shelves, and you'll find pumpkins in the six-packs. My choice when it comes to pumpkin pie in a pint glass comes from Tyranena Brewing.

Beer Here: Doubly Down 'N Even Dirtier Barrel-Aged Chocolate Vanilla Double Stout from Tyranena Brewing
Beers best sipped in colder climes are beginning to turn up in Madison, but I hope it's not an indication that snow will be here anytime soon. Rob Larson, owner and brewmaster at Tyranena Brewing in Lake Mills, has not been sitting around waiting for the temperature to fall -- he actually started working on the bigger, bolder brews of winter more than eight months ago. After a long sleep in bourbon barrels over the summer, his new, rich Doubly Down 'N Even Dirtier chocolaty double stout is now on the shelves.

Beer and bourbon can take the chill off a cold night this time of year. When both come in the same glass, as with bourbon barrel-aged beers, the combination can be relaxing, if not hypnotic, helping you forget the stress of a long day. The trick is finding a nice balance between each. When you do find it, you have something special. Tyranena Brewing has figured out this formula with its Shaggin' in the Wood Scotch Ale.

There's something quite comforting about the rich brown beers of fall. Just as the weather turns a little cooler, they show up like the changing leaves. When mixed with a little bourbon, these smooth dark brews are perfect for damp autumn days. Rocky's Revenge is one such beer, named for the local legend of a Loch Ness-type of serpent that lives in the waters of Lake Mills' Rock Lake. Made by Tyranena Brewing, it's a bourbon barrel-aged brown ale with a flavor larger than life, just like the creature that inspired its name.

On a recent visit to the Tyranena Brewing tasting room in Lake Mills, I watched as the first bottles of the 2013 release of its chipotle porter were being offered. So many were being sold over the bar that it looked like a takeout restaurant offering a sought-after, limited daily special. After watching this for a while, I too was caught up in this beer-infused frenzy, and ended up with a four-pack of Benji's Smoked Chipotle Imperial Porter.

Saisons have an interesting history. The style emerged centuries ago in the French-speaking regions of southern Belgium, around Wallonia. Not much is known of the earliest saisons, only that they were considered farmhouse ales, intended for farm hands. It was brewed in the cooler months and saved until the hot days of summer. Modern saisons, especially those made by American brewers, are probably much stronger and richer in body than the early versions. A new limited release beer from Tyranena, named Prom Date Cherry Saison, is one such modern take on the style.

Weekend nights are usually busy in the taproom at Tyranena Brewing Co. in Lake Mills, but the first Saturday of the new year was a particularly lively scene. Dozens of people gathered around the bar, hoping they would get to join the brewery's exclusive mug club.

Andrea McHenry, an assistant brewer at Tyranena Brewing Company in Lake Mills, fired up the brewhouse kettles on Saturday to celebrate International Women's Collaboration Brew Day. Organized by the Pink Boots Society, a group devoted to advancing women in the brewing industry, the day brought together women brewers (or "brewsters") from some 60 breweries around the world, who each created their own version of a beer dubbed "Unite Pale Ale."

Craft beer enthusiasts devote a lot of attention to bitterness as they seek out the latest and greatest, so much so that good brews under their noses can be overlooked. The altbier is one such style, with its smooth malty tones and clean balance. Then there's a lack of familiarity with the alt, given that few breweries in Wisconsin produce them. But I find this copper-colored beer to be wonderfully easy to drink -- almost too easy.

Blood Orange Imperial IPA from Tyranena offers a creative blend of hops and blood oranges. This IIPA provides a burst of tropical fruitiness that’s assertive, strong and distinctive.
