Performing as Icarus Himself, Nick Whetro of National Beekeepers Society has put together a tart, hooky five-song EP that's crammed with focused vocal melodies, inventive guitar treatments and crafty arrangements. He's also enraptured by the dark side here and uses his acid tongue to evoke a grim world of sorrows on disturbing originals like "Scene (From a Car Crash)," "Amputee" and the gooseflesh-raising Jonestown massacre re-creation "People's Temple." At times, Whetro's world-weary vocal delivery is a bit forced, but I'm not sure that'll bother indie types much.
