Looking for the perfect stocking stuffer for a Madison music scene fanatic? I recommend the Wa-Ha Palooza Reunion DVD. Released last month and recorded in June at the Barrymore Theatre, the video features 22 songs from Free Hot Lunch! The campy, harmonic, beach-soaked acoustics of this once-famous Madison '80s band is showcased in all its glory, including the show-stopper, "I Hate to Wake Up Sober in Nebraska." You can order the disc at www.wahasurfshop.com.
The Gomers have put local media on alert: They're searching for Wolfman Jack in Madison. Actually, they're searching for a Madisonian to play the part of Wolfman Jack at their "Midnight Special" CD release show Jan. 12 at the High Noon Saloon. The gig will re-create The Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack TV show from the 1970s. Auditions are Dec. 21, 5:30 p.m. at the High Noon.
Joe Leonard of Madison's Guppy Effect isn't known for subtle emotions. So it's no surprise that Leonard is PSYCHED to be joined by his original guitarist, Wes Columbia, for a gig on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the High Noon Saloon. "Wes is an amazing guitarist, self-schooled and influenced by the old rock 'n' roll masters as well as current indie rock," says Leonard. "Wes is the best guitarist we've ever had in terms of vision and chemistry."
Columbia left Guppy Effect in 2005, but he'll be making the drive from Milwaukee this weekend for a reunion with his old band. "It is sure to be unparalleled rocking energy!" says Leonard.
