Ex-Madisonians God-des and She announce their arrival on the national stage with "Top of the World," the lead track on their new album Stand Up. This steady rolling track is lushed up by local knobtwister DJ Pain 1with echoed horn samples and slapped from behind with a floorboard rumbling kick drum that thumps the murky depths with all the power and glory of an old-school 808.
The wise-cracking God-des spends a lot of time here embracing the out lesbian duo's connections to the Badger State. Consquently, there are shout outs to cheese and State Street and beer and the whole Midwest vibe. But she's at her wickedest when she rhymes "Laverne and Shirley/the girls are purty/kiss me up late night/and do the dirty, dirty."
Later on Stand Up, the rambunctious emcee confesses her admiration for Eminem. That line, as much as anything else on the CD, matches the fading Detroit wunderkind's talent for twisting and kinking pop culture references until they become subversive morsels of unadulterated rebellion.
An MP3 of the track are available in the related downloads at right. More music by the duo can be found at their MySpace page. God-des and She are headlining a release party for their new CD on Friday, November 16 at the Majestic. They will be joined on stage by The Real Jaguar, DJ Pain 1, and The Fall Guys in this party hosted by send a message.
