UP: Madison City Channel. The local channel wins five national awards at the annual Government Programming Awards in Orlando, Fla. Among the pieces that win recognition is a profile of Monona Terrace and a series on Madison's sesquicentennial.
DOWN: UW-Madison. Rob Carpick, a prominent researcher in nanotechnology who has brought in $3.4 million in grants, leaves the university, citing its lack of domestic-partner benefits. Carpick is moving to the University of Pennsylvania, saying it's more "enlightened than the state of Wisconsin on this issue." The UW-Madison is the only Big Ten school that doesn't offer domestic-partner benefits; a plan to allow the university to do so was proposed by Gov. Jim Doyle and rejected by the state Legislature last year.
