UP: Jeffrey Skiles. A nation hungry for heroes goes gaga over last Thursday's emergency landing of a passenger plane on the Hudson River; Skiles, who lives in the village of Oregon, was the co-pilot. All 155 passengers escaped safely, except the one who ended up with two broken legs.
DOWN: UW Madison. The Wall Street Journal reports that Dr. Thomas Zdeblick, an orthopedic surgeon at UW Hospital, has made $19 million over five years from a medical device company, mostly as royalties on his inventions. This causes some to question the adequacy of current UW conflict-disclosure rules under which Zdeblick needed to report only that he made "more than $20,000" from this outside interest. The UW is looking into tightening things up.
