UP: Madison schools. The district wins a $5.5 million, five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will be used to reduce class sizes and hire advisers and mentors for the city's high schools. Students at East and La Follette will be randomly assigned to smaller "learning communities" - a method already used at Memorial and West.
DOWN: Channel 3. WISC-TV hires disgraced former Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala as a political commentator for its website. Chvala pleaded guilty in 2005 to misconduct in office and violating election laws. He was sentenced to nine months in jail. Chvala, a Democrat, appears with Republican strategist Brandon Scholz on the web shows.
