UP: Overture Center. The arts center, which will change operators to the nonprofit Overture Foundation on Jan. 1, approves a 2011-12 budget that projects a $622,500 surplus. Overture expects to see a jump in fundraising from $350,000 to $2 million.
DOWN: Private music venues. The Overture Center's emphasis on booking more music acts, including Gillian Welch, Ted Nugent and Gordon Lightfoot, has Madison's private theaters worried that the city-subsidized facility is undercutting them. Steve Sperling, general manager of the Barrymore Theatre, tells the Wisconsin State Journal: "They could put us out of business."
