Up: Women cops. The Madison Police Department announces that for the first time, a majority of its new recruits - eight of a class of 15 - are women. About 30% of the MPD is now female, compared to the national average of 12%. The 15 new hires were selected from among 1,600 applicants.
Down: The New Badger Partnership. This controversial plan backed by Gov. Scott Walker and UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin to split the Madison campus from the UW system is declared dead by Republicans in the Legislature. But Martin remains optimistic some compromise could emerge, telling The Capital Times, "It is my understanding that things are not done at the Capitol."
