Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz names Ray Harmon, 40, as his newest aide. Harmon is currently Gov. Jim Doyle's special projects manager and director of his Milwaukee office. Harmon, who received a heart transplant in February, also leads Doyle's Organ and Tissue Donor Initiative.

DeVere and Barbara Clay and their two grandchildren die of carbon monoxide poisoning while camping in a horse trailer at the Alliant Energy Center. The Tomah horse breeders were there for the nation's first World Clydesdale Show. Authorities blame a gas-powered heater the family used in the trailer to keep warm.
State Commerce Secretary Mary Burke resigns after two years, effective Nov. 1. Burke, president of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, says she wants to devote more time to the organization.

Hortense Sperling of Verona dies at age 108. Sperling was thought to be the oldest person in Dane County and celebrated many of her last birthdays at the Nitty Gritty, among TV crews.

Nigel Head, a 30-year-old homeless man from Madison, is sentenced to 30 years in prison for killing Bret Turner. Turner's body was found last spring, stabbed 14 times, in his apartment on Baldwin Street. Prosecutors say Head was at Turner's apartment for a sexual encounter. Head stole Turner's wallet and spent two days at the Inn on Park before police arrested him.
About 4,000 enthusiastic supporters welcome presidential candidate Barack Obama at the Monona Terrace convention center. Obama, the first major candidate to visit Madison, spoke for an hour about his views on health care, the troops in Iraq and his lack of experience in Washington.
American Transmission Company submits a proposal to the state Public Service Commission to build a 345-kilovolt transmission line through Dane County, at an estimated cost of between $213 million and $250 million. ATC wants to begin building in 2010 and put the line in service by 2013.

Gov. Jim Doyle warns that state government might have to partially shut down unless the state budget is settled soon. Doyle warns of possible closures of UW System campuses and temporary layoffs of state employees.
Sara Klade-Hall, 20, is charged with five felonies for repeatedly abusing an 18-month-old child at the Rock-A-Bye Child Care Learning Center in Sun Prairie. A second former employee, Lindsey Anderson, 21, is charged for allegedly participating in and witnessing some of the abuse.

Police find a Hispanic woman dead in a Fitchburg apartment, following an apparent domestic dispute. An unidentified person is taken from the scene to the hospital.
Hundreds of protesters converge on the Capitol demanding "No New Taxes!," outnumbered by unionists and others urging the Legislature to "Do Your Job!" and pass a state budget.
