Julie Thao, formerly a nurse at St. Mary's, is charged with a felony for allegedly neglecting safety procedures and administering the wrong drug to a 16-year-old patient, who died while giving birth in July. Thao, 41, faces a maximum of six years in prison if convicted.

William Smith, 57, of Madison, dies of blood loss after being stabbed in his upper right thigh and chest on the city's southwest side. Police later arrest Eric K. Wells, 48, in connection with the crime.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court refuses to hear the city of Madison's appeal of a decision that struck down the rental portion of its inclusionary zoning ordinance. Lower courts have sided with the Apartment Association of South Central Wisconsin in deeming the ordinance's requirement that developers include low-income units in their projects a form of rent control, which state law prohibits.
A bomb threat at Madison East High School briefly delays voting at its polling site. While police search the school, voting booths are temporarily moved outside.
Unofficial election results: U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl wins his fourth term, beating Republican challenger Robert Lorge, 1,434,027 to 628,091, while the Green Party's Rae Vogeler gets 42,263 votes. Rep. Tammy Baldwin overcomes Republican Dave Magnum, 191,361 to 112,976.
Gov. Jim Doyle bests Republican Mark Green, 1,135,714 to 976,670. Republican J.B. Van Hollen narrowly defeats Kathleen Falk, 1,061,991 to 1,052,652. Secretary of State Doug La Follette retains his seat over Republican Sandy Sullivan, 1,181,169 to 794,604. Democrat Dawn Marie Sass defeats incumbent Jack Voight for state treasurer, 968,169 to 959,891.
Voters also pass a constitutional amendment banning civil unions and same-sex marriage, 1,259,489 to 860,996, and a non-binding pro-death penalty referendum, 1,162,249 to 931,592.
In Dane County, voters choose Democrat Dave Mahoney over Republican Mike Hanson for sheriff, 136,443 to 70,287. They also pass an advisory referendum seeking to study the need for new transmission lines, 152,765 to 48,934.
In Madison, voters pass a $23 million school referendum, 70,504 to 31,567.
