The Dane County Board appoints David Worzala as the county's new treasurer. Worzala jumps right in and reminds people that the deadline for paying the second half of their property taxes is July 31.

A Dane County jury convicts Julio Marin-Garcia, 28, of killing his wife, 23-year-old Yuliana Hernandez-Hernandez, last year. The conviction carries a mandatory life sentence. Wisconsin's Commerce Secretary Jack Fischer resigns, less than two weeks after it is reported that he spent more than $21,000 in public funds on three international trips this spring.
7.20 Sunday
Nick Dewhirst, 25, of Onalaska, is killed in Afghanistan. Dewhirst is the seventh Wisconsin soldier to die there; 89 have been killed in Iraq.
7.21 Monday
Madison's Plan Commission rejects a plan to use free land from the U.S. Army for a homeless shelter on Park Street. The commission instead gives the shelter three acres of land owned by the Water Utility on the far east side. The city plans to buy the Park Street site from the Army for a mixed-use development. The proposal must still be approved by the Madison Common Council.
Fire causes $150,000 worth of damage at Dimitri's Gyros on East Washington Avenue. Investigators say the blaze was caused by some oily rags that spontaneously combusted. Police arrest Amir "Buck" Furlow, 19, in Chicago for the murder of 30-year-old Marcus Hamilton in June. Police say Furlow and Promethius "Slim" Brown, who is still at large, killed Hamilton in his home on Tempe Drive while robbing him.
A Northwest Airlines flight, en route from Minneapolis to Chicago, makes an emergency landing in Madison after losing cabin pressure. The 115 passengers and six crew aboard the flight are not injured.
7.22 Tuesday
J. Richard Outhier, 38, of Madison, is sentenced to more than four years in prison for identity theft. Outhier stole the identities of a man with Down syndrome in Boston and of emergency room patients in Texas before moving to Madison. Daniel Wright, 48, of Madison, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the stabbing death of Cassandra Mays, 45, last week. Police say Wright killed Mays in a domestic dispute.
Wisconsin Democracy Campaign reports that candidates and outside interest groups spent a record-breaking $6 million on the state Supreme Court race this spring between Michael Gableman and Louis Butler. Gableman, the beneficiary of most of this spending, won the race.
