Longtime south-side activists Stuart Seffern and Debbie Loiselle are killed when their single-engine plane crashed during take-off south of Chicago. Seffern, 50, and Loiselle, 52, had been active in the Burr Oaks Neighborhood Association for the past decade, with Seffern serving as its most recent president.
Cyber, a nine-year-old Siberian tiger, arrives at the Henry Vilas Zoo. He was born in captivity at the Minnesota Zoo.

Jared Salazar, 7, of Beaver Dam, is killed in a car crash on Highway 151. Jared was one of the Salazar quadruplets, who were born in 2001 at Meriter Hospital. They were thought to be the first quads ever born in Madison.

About 30 people attend a meeting of a new Dane County coalition that will focus on stemming alcohol abuse. The coalition was created by Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, as part of her anti-alcohol initiatives.

Reed Rogala is sentenced to 12-1/2 years in prison for running a drug operation in Madison. Rogala, 33, of South Orange, N.J., is a former UW student. He is also linked to Amos Mortier, a Fitchburg man who allegedly distributed Rogala's marijuana and who disappeared four years ago.
The state Department of Corrections confirms that a female prison guard at Oakhill Correctional Institute is under investigation for misconduct. A department spokesman will not reveal what the guard is accused of doing, but says she was placed on leave in November.
Candidates for the Madison Common Council and Madison School Board file to run in the spring election. On the school board, incumbent Arlene Silveira faces a challenge from businessman Donald Gors. Incumbent Lucy Mathiak has no opponent. On the city council, there are races for seven of the 20 seats, including Ald. Brenda Konkel, who faces four challengers.
The union that represents Rita Gahagan, the 911 dispatcher who mishandled a call from Brittany Zimmermann's cell phone the day she was murdered, says it will appeal Gahagan's three-day suspension. The union says Dane County did not have cause to suspend Gahagan.
About 150 people hold an anti-war protest downtown to decry Israel's assault on the Gaza strip.
The Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative Christian group, criticizes a plan by the UW Hospital and Clinics to offer second-trimester abortions at the Madison Surgery Center on Park Street. The plan had not previously been made public.
