Brandin Hochstrasser, a 31-year-old busker known as "Bongo Jesus," allegedly smashes his guitar over the head of a 54-year-old man who criticized his playing on State Street; police subdue him with a stun gun. Well, at least now we know who Bongo Jesus would smash with his guitar.
A federal appeals court suspends a ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research imposed by U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, at least temporarily removing obstacles on UW work.

The White House says it will award the Medal of Honor to Salvatore Guinta, who in 2007 held off ambushers in Afghanistan attempting to capture a mortally wounded Wisconsin soldier, Sgt. Joshua Brennan of McFarland. Guinta, of Iowa, will be the first living person to receive the award since the Vietnam War.
A Dane County jury convicts Richard J. Nelson, 23, of negligent homicide for a crash that killed Andrea Garcia, a 19-year-old Madison woman, in May 2009. Nelson was allegedly driving between 85 and 103 mph on Highway 51 south of McFarland when he crashed into another car. He faces 6-1/2 years in prison.

Joe Gambles, a 28-year-old Australian who lives in Colorado, breaks the course record at Ironman Wisconsin by five minutes in his first Ironman race, finishing in a mere 8 hours, 38 minutes, 32 seconds. New Zealand's Gina Crawford, 29, breaks the women's course record (which she set in 2007) by almost 10 minutes, finishing in 9 hours, 27 minutes, 26 seconds.

Wisconsin Harley-Davidson workers approve a new contract agreeing to pay freezes and job cuts in an effort to keep production and 1,350 jobs in Wisconsin.
Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney says he'll reimburse the county for two nights he spent with his family at a Green Lake resort before a July 2007 conference, after his opponent for sheriff, Shawn Haney, criticizes the spending.

Chris Berge announces plans to close his upscale Restaurant Magnus to open Velo Bahn, a casual restaurant catering to cyclists. He tells the State Journal that because of East Wilson Street construction, "I can't get a car-bound base of people to my restaurant in big enough numbers to pay all the bills."
A 21-year-old Madison native is found dead in the Chicago suburbs near a middle school after an apparent pipe bomb explodes. Police do not immediately say whether they think the act was a suicide, a murder, or some other crime.
