Thursday 9.20; About 200 UW students protest Halliburton's presence at a recruitment fair on campus. The students, who call the defense contractor a war profiteer, stage a sit-in around Halliburton's booth and sing songs.
Sun Prairie police take William Sawle, 41, into custody, after a six-hour standoff. Family members tell police that Sawle is drunk, has access to weapons and is making threats to himself and others.
Monday 9.24;Four young men are killed when their car rolls over and bursts into flames near Verona. The victims are Julian Kreyer-Nelson, 22, Matthew Miller, 18, Lucas Cowling-Ambler, 18, all of Verona, and Christopher Gillette, 17, of Madison. Police are investigating.
The Sun Prairie School District votes to place a $100 million referendum on the ballot Nov. 6. The district wants voters to okay money for a new high school and a swimming pool. Sun Prairie residents rejected a referendum for a new high school in 2006.
Patrick Okopinski, 38, former owner of All Star Gymnastics, is sentenced to seven years on probation and three months in jail for possessing child pornography.
Tuesday 9.25; Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney releases his budget request for 2008. Mahoney is asking to expand electronic monitoring, double the traffic enforcement team from three deputies to six, and spend $100,000 on gang prevention programs. The sheriff plans to pay for it all with the $3 million saved by no longer shipping inmates to other counties.
Prosecutors in Fargo, North Dakota, charge 15-year-old Sergei Carlson, of Sun Prairie, with felony murder for the death of his 16-year-old sister. While visiting North Dakota, Carlson allegedly strangled and smothered his sister, before performing a sexual act on her body.
The UW campus is temporarily shut down after police receive a call from a suicidal man claiming to be on the top of the UW-Hospital parking ramp with a weapon. The man, identified as 19-year-old Jesse Miller, is not a UW student. Police are still searching for him.
