John Olsen, 10, of Elkhorn, becomes the millionth fan at the Madison Mallards game. Olsen gets showered with confetti, throws out the ceremonial first pitch and receives a bobblehead doll and Mallards jersey. The Mallards will also commission a statue of Olsen, to be erected at the Warner Park Duck Pond in time for next season's opener.

A 74-year-old man crossing Sherman Avenue after the Mallards game is seriously injured when he is struck by an SUV, which does not stop. Police later arrest Tammie Blizzard, 45, of Madison. Blizzard is tentatively charged with causing great bodily harm by operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Former Gov. Tommy Thompson drops out of the race for president, after finishing in sixth place in the Republicans' Iowa straw poll.

New population estimates released by the state Department of Administration show Dane County has added 41,988 residents since the 2000 Census. Verona is the fastest-growing city in the state, with a population increase of 43.6% since 2000.
Madison Parks Supt. Jim Morgan announces he will retire Jan. 2. Morgan has been the head of the Parks Division since 2000.

Lightning strikes a Fitchburg home, sparking a fire and causing an estimated $350,000 in damage. Lightning is also blamed for a fire at the J.H. Findorff & Son Building on South Bedford Street, which caused $10,000 in damage.
The Madison school district says it will provide busing for private school students for the upcoming school year. The district missed a deadline to notify parents that it wouldn't provide the service, which costs about $229,000.
Larome Kingcade, 41, of Madison is arrested on tentative charges of kidnapping and burglary. Kingcade allegedly broke into the west-side home of a 61-year-old Catholic nun, then forced her to drive him around looking for money. The nun was eventually released unharmed, after repeatedly telling Kingcade she had no money.
The Vilas Zoo introduces two new giraffes, Zawadi and Sweta, both five years old. They replace two giraffes that died last November from a degenerative bone disease.
Stoughton's city council votes against the creation of a Regional Transit Authority, which would impose a half cent sales tax to fund mass transit in Dane County. Sun Prairie, Waunakee and Cross Plains have also voted to oppose the RTA.
William McCoy, 31, is sentenced to 35 years in prison for shooting and killing 38-year-old Adrian Bowdry during a 2003 altercation over drugs.
